There are three ways to reach Antarctica. One would be to venture on an Antarctica cruise, another is through a sailboat, and the third one would be to travel by plane. The reason why so many people want to go to Antarctica is that despite its uninhabitable environment, it does have a breathtaking landscape. Most importantly however, thousands of penguins and seals can be spotted on the shores of Antarctica during summer and whales can be seen not far off too. The animals that call Antarctica their temporary home is the best reason why people want to go there.

Most people usually reach Antarctica through Antarctica cruises. Antarctica cruises are offered by a few cruise line companies based in South America, New Zealand, and Australia. The cruise ships bound for Antarctica are either ice breakers or strengthened for ice, allowing them to break through ice or withstand possible impacts to ice floats. Antarctica cruises begin in October or November and end in March. Depending on preference, trips can last for days to weeks.

The second way to reach Antarctica is by plane. Planes are commonly used by researchers and travelers who want to explore the continent’s research stations and inlands. Antarctica has about 28 small airports where planes can land. The only problem with traveling by plane is that it is usually restricted in the summer months. This means that you’d have to go there during winter time when traveling by plane. Winter is not a good time to take Antarctica pictures too even if it’s the landscape that you’re after.

If you want to travel to Antarctica on a budget, you might want to consider taking IAATO sailboats that leave from South America. Sailboats headed for Antarctica are available in the summer months too, just like Antarctica cruises. According to an Antarctica travel guide, what’s unique about traveling with a sailboat is that passengers are allowed to participate in the weeks long trip even if they don’t have any sailing experience. Traveling to Antarctica on a sailboat will take about three to four weeks.
